Jack and Charlie’s Nursery: Part 1

Nurseries are one of the most popular and fun spaces to decorate (at least according to my pinterest feed), so where do you start when you’re a decorator and finally designing your very first baby room for your own littles? Now that the April issue of Style At Home is out on newsstands, I can finally share how I designed Jack and Charlie’s nursery.

image

In the days leading up to my first ultrasound, I let myself fantasize over the pretty fabric samples I had been hoarding over the years for my future little girl’s room. (As one of four girls, I was convinced I would be giving birth to at least one little lady down the line) When I found out I was having identical twin boys (what the what?) I had to throw out most of the ideas and start from scratch. Luckily there was one well-suited print  I had tucked away at the back of my mind.

image

As a design editor at a decorating magazine, I received media releases about new fabric and wallpaper collections almost every week. As soon as the press package for Osborne and Little’s Penguin Library wallpaper crossed my desk I knew I would be using it some day down the line in a project. It was just so me. The bright colour covers mixed with the black and white penguin branding makes for serious eye candy and I couldn’t resist the sense of retro nostalgia it evoked.

image

The wallpaper appealed to me for the nursery for a number of reasons. I loved the idea of fostering a love of books with my boys right from the start and I thought it was a safe investment to choose something gender neutral with such a wide array of colours to work with. I pulled out navy, sky blue, periwinkle and orange as my main palette but the room could suit a little girl if ever need be in the future with a few easy changes, such as a new purple small area rug, or hot pink bedding and accessories. The paper is also sophisticated enough that the room could become our office one day - book themed wallpaper is fairly academic after all!

image

Playing on the penguin theme, I ordered cutie pie felted mobiles from needlenerd. I found Bonnie’s work on etsy and was delighted to discover she lived right here in Toronto. She was kind enough to match the colours of the hearts in the mobile to the colours seen in the wallpaper so they coordinate perfectly. A fun fact is newborns only see in black white the first few weeks as their eyes develop, so the boys were madly in love with gazing up at the black and white penguins!

image

The other main print in the room is the fabulous splatter embroidered drapery fabric, Skittles, from Lulu DK children’s collection for Schumacher. The sky blue has a purplish undertone so it doesn’t scream “little boys only” and the print is youthful while still being chic and timeless. Investing in black out lined drapery was imperative to maintaining a good nap schedule- good window treatments (with brackets to keep dangling cords out of harm’s way) is one area of nursery decor that you should not skimp on!

image

In a perfect world I’d have added extra embellishment with navy pom fringe on the leading edge of the drapery panels, like these ready-made panels from PB Teen, and the perimeter of the roman shade, but I had to exercise restraint for budget sake. Budget also meant I couldn’t paint out the ceiling in a soft sky blue- something I was also was keen on doing to punch up the white envelope of the room.

image

To balance out the strong patterns of the drapery and accent wallpaper behind the crib, I decided to go bold with the framing of my artwork on either side of the window. I chose navy frames with periwinkle mats from PI Fine Art for the lovely watercolours I purchased from Mary’s Flower Garden on etsy. Both my husband and I are major animal lovers and so we welcomes the idea of adding more fauna into the existing penguin mix.

image

This snapshot also shows a separate little watercolour we purchased of two baby elephants together. We framed these twin babies without the blue mat,  but added an orange filler to the frame to tie in our accent colour. The shelf also shows off whimsical letters made out of old library books from Anthropologie  that serve as another extension of the book theme.

image

The last literary nod comes courtesy of the artwork on the other side of the cribs by Olive and Birch, another etsy artist. They feature favourite quotes from two of my top children’s books, Peter Pan and Goodnight Moon. What a sweet send off into slumber!

Golden Nursery Finds

It’s so marvellous to see that pretty much every major shelter retailer is having a golden moment right now. It doesn’t take very long to spot something gold or brass when walking the showroom floor or browsing a catalogue or website.

The Animal Print Shop by Sharon Montrose

The love for the warm metals has even crept into nurseries and kids spaces, a  place usually reserved for more cutesy and less sophisticated details. This is shown to fabulous effect in the nursery above, designed by Rachelle Belle as seen on the Animal Print Shop blog. In celebration of this golden age, here are some of my favourite ways to add some golden glam into your nursery or kid space:

image

The Don’t Grow Up (It’s a Trap) Gold Foil Print by Penny Paper Co is the perfect tongue in chic piece to add to a graphic gallery wall above a modern crib. At $27 it won’t break the bank and it is sized to fit IKEA’s ribba for easy and affordable framing.

image

I love reimaging a vintage dresser as a change table in a nursery (add a change topper and ta da!), and these gilded swirled geode knobs from anthropologie would make for a seriously stunning hardware choice. They’re $18 each and would add an ethereal element to a kid’s bedroom that is fresh and unexpected.

The Emily & Meritt Chandelier Table Lamp

The Emily & Meritt Chandelier Table Lamp by PB Teen would make for a whimsical and welcome light to read bedtime stories by in a feminine and pretty little girl’s room. The beaded arms and delicate flowers would look right at home with a floral wallpaper accent wall. (I’m talking about you Rose Decay)

image

Last but not least for a boho baby’s lair, the global-looking Tangier Bronze Stool from West Elm would be a perfect choice to sit next to your glider. The stool, $299, is versatile and adult-enough that it can be moved into your living room once your glider days are gone.

image

Personalizing your baby’s space with their initials is always a nice touch and these $10 gilded letters from Indigo add some shimmery glamour to the wall. Spell out a quirky saying or their full name for a maximalist approach.

Egg-cellent Easter Decor

There are so many different directions you can go with Easter decorations, but I’ve always been drawn to the classic spring colours and sweet small scale patterns that remain tried and true year after year.
Here are a couple of ideas I’d try out if I was to do the Easter thing:
image
I’d add a piece of art to my tablescape, such as this adorable print from Minted that would look sweet leaning on a sideboard. Art is a great way to add height to any vignette!
Easter Egg Vase
I’d also mix in some multicolour eggs into my florals by using the good old layered vase trick, like in this image from Better Homes and Gardens: nestle a smaller vase into a larger one and fill the gap in between with your desired filler. This would be great for Cadbury eggs!

Made in the Shades: The Aesthete Sunglasses Prints

These sunglasess giclee prints by The Aesthete that Indigo is selling are so chic and whimsical.

Vintage Tortoiseshell Sunglasses Print 5x7

Ranging from $15-29, I may or may not have ordered the vintage tortoiseshell glasses print, which gives off a fabulous retro vibe!

Lolita Print 11x14

The Lolita heart-shaped glasses print is very tongue in cheek and oh so flirty.

Chanel Sunglasses Print 8x10

The Chanel sunglasses print will lend your walls that high-fashion vibe – so haute!

I Want That: Heart Art

Heartstring Garland

I know this is a garland on a children’s website, but my gosh I think they designed it for me! In my signature trio of black white and gold, I just love the festive feeling of these strings of  hearts and may need to buy a couple for a future soiree!

Find it here: Heartstring Garland, $29, Land of Nod

Puck Love

puckpals1.jpg

I am totally digging this hand silk-screened poster from Toronto illustrator Dave Murray depicting all 30 hockey teams in the NHL. Using figurative symbols, such as a blue maple leaf and a snazzy-looking devil, I like how it adds a sense of cheeky imagination to either a little boy’s room or man cave.

puckpals2.jpg

At only $50 and 22x30, I think it would make a great home-grown gift for your favourite hockey fan.

Perfection

This new Vanitas by Paul Béliveau at Gallerie De Bellefeuille is totally killing me right now. The Coralie Bickford-Smith cover, the Monet water lilies, the Warhol flowers, and that mauve color in the corner…too much!

I am actually using that lillac colour in not one but two different rooms in my house, so I guess it’s not a surprise that I’m salivating over this guy too, which also features the pretty pale purple shade as an accent:

image
Is this cabinet I spotted at Of Things Past on the weekend not totally ridic? It’s like Kelly Wearstler pastels got mixed in with my grandmother’s chinoiserie all together in one over-the-top piece. The fact that it is sitting on a greek key brass base just pushes it over the edge. Not to mention the pattern and colours totally resemble one of my fabric obsessions that I am incorporating into my den: Manuel Canovas’ Dara from Primavera (you’ll hear more about this gem later on)
image
Let’s see a close up of this brass greek key base to appreciate how divine this piece is. If no one else buys it and it goes down in price, I may have to cave and buy it- it’s just too crazy not to covet.

Abstracts At The Artist Project

When perusing portfolios, pinterest and other mags, it’s the tension between modern and traditional styles in an interior that most often catches my eye. It’s what keeps me guessing and wanting to see more, and one of my favourite ways to achieve that tension is by pairing a bold abstract piece of art with a more classical interior.

The art could be by a more established artist or by someone local, it doesn’t matter the provenance of the piece so much as it’s  the basic idea of hanging something that is seemingly so haphazard in a setting that’s so calculated. (Like in the Suzanne Kasler-designed space above)
Here is a sampling of some of my favourite abstracts from the Artist Project, a great spot to start when looking for your own piece, which just wrapped up here in Toronto:
image
The black ground and large scale of this canvas from Mitchell Clark Meller is intriguing. I love how the black just sucks you in for a closer look. It would be unreal paired with my black and white striped setee.
image
These little guys from David Brown were small in scale and price at just $75 a pop but were big on style! I love displaying small pieces on easels and placing them on a console or chest-  this one would be amazing sitting on an elaborately detailed mahogany chest of drawers.

Anna Bateman’s “Floral Zest” has a traditional starting point of a vase filled with flowers but then goes a little haywire with bursts of messy colours. I’m drawn to the blues and pinks, a colour combo I am feeling right now, that would look beautiful with the navy sectional I am designing.
image
The collegiate-looking A is a fun surprise on this piece by Neil Young which is coloured like a miami sunset but given a more modern edge with its resin finish. It would be amazing in a neutral living room.

Baby You’re a Firework

As a pyro, firweworks are one my favourite spectacles and one of the very best parts of the victoria day long weekend here in Canada.

To celebrate May 24 (which isn’t actually remotely close to May 24 at all this year), here are some amazing photographs from Canadian artist Jeremy Watt  (repped by Atti Gallery) that capture the frenetic energy of fireworks erupting in the night sky.

Marlie’s Apartment Update: Art Explosion and Accessory Shopping

We have hit the final stretch now at Marlie’s apartment after a few long months of planning, sourcing and shopping up a storm. Long gone are the puke green walls and orange-tinged wood laminate flooring – now a beautiful rich brown bamboo floor has been laid and the walls are coated in a warm creamy tone. I’d be remiss to not point out that killer accent wall in her office nook too! (I faint over the fact that I finally got to use a Cole and Son Fornasetti wallpaper!) Most of the furniture is installed and now it’s time for the finishing touches that will make her house a home.

P1190542

An eclectic mix of original art from local talent, such as Tony Taylor and Mike Brown, along with some fabulous posters and prints sourced on ebay, PI Fine Art and other sources have been custom framed and are ready to go.

image

Sourcing accessories has been lots of fun - this past weekend we picked up the crystal  pineapple (who we have named Antonio because it is being used as part of the set decor for an Antonio Banderas movie shooting this week in the city) and tangerine splatter urns from Decorum Decorative Finds. We also scooped up these sharp white plastic pears and apples from L’Atelier to use as part of a centerpiece for her dining table.

I’m excited to show you some more snapshots as the project finishes up!

Cotton Candy Clouds on Canvas

Last year I was introduced to the awe-inspiring paintings of Will Cotton and months later looking at them still leaves me breathless. The American artist studied in France and New York and combines his love of baking and sweets with his craft to create each of his luscious pieces.  All of his work is delicious but it is the pastel pink cotton candy clouds mixed with feminine flesh and the playful ribbon stripe crowns that make me smile the most.

PS- Does Miss Katy Perry look familiar? Cotton collaborated with the pop star for her most recent album cover! You can even watch a video of their work together here.

André Monet’s Ladies

I walked into The Opera Gallery at the Bal Harbour shops and fell in love with the mixed media portraits of pop culture icons by André Monet. I was delighted to discover the artist is a fellow Canuck and that he is also represented by a Canadian gallery in the artist’ native Montreal. The bits and bites of newspaper type, crossword puzzles and maps layered with the timeless images would make more fabulous foils in a traditional interior.

While he portrays many fabulous icons, my favourite pieces by (the other) Monet are the black and white ladies:

When Your Eyes Are Bigger Than Your Stomach…

You should look to the beautiful artwork of Soojin Kim, whose depictions of sweets look good enough to eat. When I visited the Tao Water Gallery in Provincetown, I couldn’t help but swoon over both the skill of the artist and the subject matter! The paintings are so  lifelike that they could pass for photographs, but make no mistake, in person they are imbued with a depth and richness that only oil paintings can provide.

P1150606

I would love to see a mini gallery wall of these cookie and cracker still life’s in a kitchen! (especially the teddy graham and goldfish- yummers!) The mix and match gold and wood framing adds to the off-beat feel of the series.

 P1150607

There is also the  oreo series, with it’s more simplified black and white palette that may appeal to more subdued tastes.

image

My personal favourite though, is the large square of candy spilling out diagonally across the canvas – how perfect would this be for a mod children’s room or nursery! The colours are so luscious and bright. I’m more of a chocolate and chips kind of girl, but looking at this piece makes me want some rockets right now!

Check out Soojin Kim’s website for more scrumptious works of art.
